Designing Marketing Emails

The basics behind designing the best and most effective emails to target your audience.

Email marketing is a great way to reach your audience in a way that is more personalized and intimate than a commercial or billboard ad. When designing marketing emails, you should always keep a few key things in mind:

1. You should have a clear and concise subject line. Create a compelling subject line that captures the audience’s attention and clearly conveys the value or benefit of opening the email.

2. Make it personal. Use personalization techniques to address the recipient by name and tailor the content based on their preferences or past interactions with your brand. This could be something as simple as starting it off with “Hey [client name]!” and including something regarding a product they added to their cart but abandoned such as “Were you interested in the ? Well check out this deal that only lasts [number of days, hours, etc.] long.” Segment your email list based on relevant criteria and tailor your messages accordingly. Delivering personalized content and offers based on the recipient’s preferences or behavior increases the likelihood of engagement.

3. Be adaptable for everyone. Ensure your email is mobile-friendly and responsive, meaning it adapts to different screen sizes and devices. Many people now check emails on their smartphones, so your email should be easy to read and navigate on mobile devices. Think about how your attachments might look on different devices and how much space they may take up of your email.

4. Make it look nice! Create a visually appealing layout with a good balance of text and images. Use a clean and organized design that guides the reader’s eye through the content and highlights the most important information. Use short paragraphs, bullet points, and headings to make your email easy to scan and digest. Highlight important information and ensure the font size and color contrast are suitable for readability.

5.Include a clear call-to-action (CTA). Include a clear and compelling CTA that tells the recipient what action to take next. Use prominent buttons or links that stand out and are easy to click on.

6.Make sure you are sending out valuable content. You can achieve this by providing relevant and valuable content that your audience will find interesting and useful. Avoid being overly promotional and focus on delivering educational or entertaining content that aligns with your audience’s interests.

7.Consistent branding. Maintain consistent branding across your emails by using your company logo, colors, and font styles. This helps create a recognizable and professional image for your brand.

  1. Make sure to test it first! A/B test different elements of your emails, such as subject lines, CTAs, or layouts, to determine what resonates best with your audience. Continuously monitor the performance of your emails and make data-driven optimizations to improve results.
  2. Don’t break any rules… Ensure compliance with relevant email marketing regulations, such as the CAN-SPAM Act (in the United States) or the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (in the European Union). Provide clear unsubscribe options and respect your subscribers’ privacy rights.
  1. Create automated email workflows.
Implement automated email campaigns triggered by specific actions or events, such as welcome emails, abandoned cart reminders, or post-purchase follow-ups. These workflows help nurture leads and engage customers throughout their journey. If they happened to get busy while looking at your products, you can simply send them a follow-up email saying that their cart is waiting for them, or after a purchase, you can send an email asking their level of satisfaction with your product.

In the end, every audience is unique, so it’s essential to monitor your email metrics and adapt your strategies based on the feedback and preferences of your subscribers. Make sure to follow the tips and tricks provided and always keep your business goals in mind. Now get out there and get to emailing!
